White Kitchens

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 Posed In :Blog   By :nadiah 16 Comments

White is beautiful in the kitchen, the problem with it’s popularity is that it can sometimes appear quite standard. Below are some images that aim to inspire your new kitchen design by adding different features to make your white kitchen unique, fun and inspirational.

White kitchens are timeless, elegant, modern and spacious. White reflects all the colours of the visible spectrum to our eyes. Some colour theorists suggest white is not a colour, but the absence of colour.  White represents clarity, innocence and purity. Spatially, white can make a room appear larger and more open than any other colour, making it a popular choice for kitchen designs. But how do you make your kitchen have character and personality without feeling like a standard run of the mill kitchen. Below are some idea’s to make your white kitchen pop.

Dramatic Lighting

White kitchens allow the space to look bigger and more open. Using a white kitchen as a blank canvas, you can choose to be daring with your lighting features.

antique white kitchenThis antique white kitchen, designed by interior designer Lisa Kauffman Tharp in Massachusetts, utilises bold pendant lights from high ceilings to create a warm, open, traditional and inviting space.

In contrast, this white kitchen is modern, pared down and streamlined. Low hanging pendants add a playful element. Combined with the range hood, these shapes define the kitchen space.

An elegant black candelabra hangs boldly in this modern white kitchen. Black chairs and a rustic table add visual contrast.

Vividly White

Why not make a statement with your white kitchen and go all the way? These kitchens are white in extreme and speak clearly what white is all about: clean, open, modern.

Soft in it’s approach, this kitchen is all about elegance; the floors are white washed, the cabinets, walls, floors, lighting and bench-tops are all white. The space is open, clean and calm with the notion of visual integrity.

A little more dramatic, the walls, floors, ceiling, bench-top, cabinetry and furniture are all white. The effect is one of purity and sharpness, allowing the room a crisp visual integrity. Not a look for those who are prone to clutter.

Dark Floors

Dark floors are the perfect compliment to white kitchens, they make the white of the kitchen look cleaner and brighter, whilst adding depth and contrast to the space.

The white simplicity of this kitchen pairs with dark, wide, textured floorboards. Combining a modern look with rustic furniture makes this kitchen interesting, balanced and simple.

Texture

Juxtaposition of textures gives a space character. Use existing architectural elements or add new textures or materials with white for interesting effects in your kitchen.

rustic white kitchenThis white kitchen features rustic, weathered posts and beams. The white is clean and elegant, the posts add strength, depth and character.

White kitchens stand the test of time. White makes a space look bigger, and provides a blank canvas to add your own personality and style.  Whatever your taste may be, you can make your white kitchen interesting, unique and inspirational by using these techniques.

I feel that there is nothing more elegant then a white kitchen, they remind me of beautiful homes in country. I especially like the designs with the dark floors.

There is something that is so attractive about these kitchens: they are immaculate, pristine, spotless! And the white colour emphasizes that so much more! However, most of us live in a kitchen that gets dirty, messy, with real objects all over the place (including food, yes! hello, it’s a kitchen! LOL) with children running around, or the dog sitting in a corner … I read this article and see these stunning designs and I just want to have one of these kitchens right now! Sometimes though, I wish we could see people and real objects and food to make it a bit more real :-) Jokes aside, I love the design by Lisa Kauffman Tharp – simply amazing.

Hi, thanks John……you are right, these white kitchens have been cleaned and organised to be photographed…..but i think these kitchens would still be as beautiful with real day-to-day activities taking place in them, they would however be more cluttered!

These kitchens are fantastic. I have some white cupboards and have been stressing over what tiles to use. I like the dark but everyone I talk to thinks it will make the room too dark. Its nice to see that it does work!! Thanks

Hi there, I love the white look too. So much so that we will be putting in a white kitchen into our beach house that we are getting built. However, can you give me some advice on a bench top color. We will have white walls and white blinds. The color options are in formica for bench top (on a budget). The white options have a speck through them which we are not that keen on. Was thinking a grey granite color or grey slate. How do you think this would look? Thanks heaps

      Hi Kerry

What about the colour “Cast Concrete” by Formica? Think this could be a nice combination….

      Thanks

      Nadia
