Tile Splashbacks

Tiles haven’t been so popular in recent years, but they are making a come back with many new and creative uses for your splashback. Gone are the days of 10cm x 10cm dull ceramic tiles. Today many unique and beautiful tile choices make your splashback an awe-inspiring feature.
While it is necessary to decide on your kitchen materials several weeks before the kitchen gets installed, you can choose your splashback with cabinets and bench-tops in place. This allows for your ideas to flourish and develop. This also gives you a chance to collect some sample tiles that you can physically hold up and compare with your newly installed kitchen. Having a visual reference makes your choice easy and fun. Here are some examples to help you get inspired along the way.
This kitchen features a gold-leaf mosaic tile splashback. The gold is opulent, the tiles have been expertly laid in a herringbone fashion. It is dramatic and luscious and contrasts elegantly with the dark cabinetry.
This playful kitchen has a strong Danish appeal. Designed by Lewis/Schoeplein architects, the design reflects their affinity for retro-inspired mid-century design. The white bench-top and splashback add visual continuity and make a clean contrast with the timber veneer cabinetry.
Glass tiles subtly add to this vintage/ modern kitchen. Delicate and soft aqua colour sparkles underneath the modern range-hood. Seemingly modern materials combine beautifully with the traditional cabinetry and large windows.
In no way understated or subtle, this splashback design speaks loudly. The striking pattern of these tiles continues, featured in the kickboard.
This featured splashback in mirrored mosaic tiles is only for the daring. The loud design looks stunning in the right environment.

Loving the diagonal tiles in the traditional-style kitchen and also the patterned tiles in the above photo. The glass tiles are also a brilliant idea; had never seen this before and I think I may go for something like this.

looking at the tile splashbacks above, I think the black and white design would be a little hard on the eyes after a while but I like the herringbone brick design.

When you say the mosaic tile require a lot of maintenance, what do you mean. Is it more than a wipe with glass cleaner and a glass cloth. I would like to use these tiles in my warehouse apartment and I do cook a lot. Your reply is appreciated. Thanks

They don’t require a lot of maintenance, but it’s not as easy to wipe down say as a glass splash back. Because they are mosaics, there is a lot of grout….people find this harder to keep clean than if it were one surface. However, I would not hesitate to use them if you like the look of them

Hi Nadia, thanks for your prompt reply. I dont think I can find those tiles here in Australia. I even like the silver mosaic tiles. How would they look with white benchtop, white cupboards behind a sink as the cooktop and teh canopy is going to be on the island bench. Do u have any other ideas for splashback on the sink wall. I did not want to use glass or standard tiles. Thanks.
Hi, I think the silver mosaics will be quite a stunning choice with an all white kitchen. It is more interesting than glass. There are tiles that have that uneven look that you like but they tend to be in stone or porcelain and maybe not the look you are after. Try these guys http://www.indigotiles.com.au/mosaics.html they have a glass tile that measures 48mm x 150mm. If you flick through the images the tile is called ‘stack’ and it seems to be available in quite a few colours….
